Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse trailer: Easter eggs you probably missed

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’s latest trailer is out today, and in addition to three new characters, it’s also packed with jokes, references, and blink-or-you’ll-miss-them villain appearances.

Let’s break ‘em down.

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy is … canon?

The new trailer opens with a look at the life and accomplishments of Peter Parker, your friendly and familiar neighborhood Spider-Man. A very familiar neighborhood Spider-Man, judging by the number of times the trailer directly references a scene in the Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy. Your favorite villain, Tombstone!

The new trailer tees up a number of famed foes of Spider-Man — seemingly the versions of them that have arisen in Miles Morales’ parallel earth. Right after a glimpse of Prowler, we see a redesigned Scorpion front and center, but he’s not alone. The grey Frankenstein next to him is really the super-strong and super-durable Tombstone, one of many notorious New York City crime bosses the web-slinger has come up against over the years.

The many costumes of Peter Parker (Earth-616)

A big chunk of the trailer takes place in some sort of Spider-person headquarters, full of spider-themed equipment and trophies — complete with racks of Spider-Man costumes in glass display cases worthy of the Batcave.

But there’s one suit in particular that caught our attention. Although it’s barely visible to the right of Peter’s shoulder, just behind uncomfirmed-but-likely Aunt May, there’s no mistaking the legs of that white spider-symbol: It’s the Spider-Man costume of Insomniac’s Spider-Man game, just released a few weeks ago.

This isn’t a secret reference, we just really like the expression on Peni Parker’s Spider-Slayer robot here.

But also it’s a good look at the spider-memorabilia in the background, including a bunch of spider-colored scientific equipment and what looks like… a spider-snowboard?

Chance the Multiverse Rapper

While consoling young Miles, we catch a glimpse of the Spider-Man successor’s dormitory wall, where he’s hanging an alt-universe poster for Chance the Rapper’s mixtape Coloring Book.

The musician’s been shouted out to in the pages of Marvel Comics before, but now he’s Marvel movie canon. Although who knows what his career is like in Miles’ neck of the Spider-Verse; for the cover art of Coloring Book, his third mixtape, Chance wore a “3” hat. Here he wears a “4” hat. I guess what we’re saying is: give us the missing Chance album, Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse.

The focus in this scene is all on the physical comedy of a ball of spider(person)s scuttling around the ceiling to avoid detection. But wait, is that kid reading a Spider-Man comic?

Computer, enhance!

He is! He’s reading a comic called Imagine That … There Was More Than One Spider-Man. Topical. But it’s also a nice little reference to Marvel Comics’ longstanding What If series, which would tell one-shot stories about what the Marvel Universe would have been like if major events in it had happened differently, like “What if Spider-Man had joined the Fantastic Four?” and “What if Gwen Stacy had lived?”

The Marvel Universe has a long tradition of relying on hundreds of parallel earths to explain how its continuity fits together, an idea used to great effect by Spider-Verse, the 2014 Marvel Comics crossover that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse seems to be based on.

We need to own Spider-Man’s Christmas album

Early on in the trailer Peter explains that he has a Christmas album, and if you didn’t pause to read the track titles, you’re really missing out. “Spidey, It’s Cold Outside,” “Silent Night (You’re Welcome),” “Joy to the World (That I Just Saved)” and more.
