Soundfall

In a recent interview with VGR, indie studio Drastic Games took time to discuss their debut twin-stick, rhythmically focused shooter, Soundfall. Nick Cooper and Julian Trutmann, two alumni of Epic Games who worked on Gears of War and Fortnite, are spearheading the project. It’s set in a procedurally generated fantasy world, the laws of which are bound by the art of music.

The game will feature a handful of RPG elements, as well as a fully fleshed out single-player narrative that can be played with up to four players cooperatively.

While harmonizing with Soundfall’s refrains, players search for gear and upgrades, like one-of-a-kind weapons and legendary artifacts with audio-driven powers. A diverse roster of playable characters, each with their own distinct play-style and musical palettes, makes for compelling team-play in online and couch co-op for up to four friends.

For those concerned about the game’s seeming similarities between Crypt of the NecroDancer, Trutmann had this to say:

…we’re combining a lot of the exciting games that I like – like twin-stick shooters – with a lot of the energy that comes along with rhythm-based games, and it’s something that we felt hadn’t been… it just caught our attention in the early days and we’re really excited about where it’s going.

The implementation of twin-stick mechanics in a rhythm game is sure to be an interesting one. It had apparently started off as a Guitar Hero clone for mobile, which never saw the light of day. The musical inspiration for that clone remained a part of Soundfall’s core concept, however, which bled into the game’s flashy, yet somewhat minimalist design.

In a rhythm-based game, you really want to see all of this energy and these lights and flashing colors, but at the same time, there are a lot of bad guys on the screen, you need to know where the player is, and so the visual style really demanded trying to pare down or get rid of a lot of that extra noise.

What do you think? Is Soundfall going to be another time-thief like The Binding of Isaac or Enter the Gungeon? Let us know down below!
