The new X-Men Dark Phoenix trailer show’s Jean Grey’s god-like power

Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) unleashes the full extent of her power in the latest trailer for Dark Phoenix.

Dark Phoenix is the delayed sequel to 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse that lifts from the Dark Phoenix saga in the comics, which focuses on Jean Grey and her encounter with the powerful, destructive Phoenix Force. The real goal seems to be getting us to forget the Phoenix stuff from X-Men: The Last Stand.

The first trailer for Dark Phoenix set up the conflict: Jean Grey, isolated but growing in power compared to the rest of the X-Men, turns to Magneto for questions. This new trailer sets her up against everyone, including Magneto, and shows that she might be powerful enough to take them all on. Jessica Chastain’s mysterious character also makes another ominous appearance — who is this enigmatic platinum-haired stranger?

Last year’s New York Comic Con footage revealed that the opening sequence to Dark Phoenix plays out almost the same way Jean Grey encounters the Phoenix Force in the comics, with a mission to space gone terribly wrong. We get hints of that in the trailer, but just how cosmic Dark Phoenix will get is a card writer-director Simon Kinberg has yet to play.

Dark Phoenix arrives at a strange time for the X-Men franchise. With the Disney-Fox deal finalizing this spring, it’s possible that the 12th installment of this Fox-owned X-Men universe may be the last (despite New Mutants, a small-scale, horror-movie-like spinoff of the mega-franchise, sitting on a shelf waiting for a due date). Will the MCU absorb the X-Men mythology? Or will they become a staple of Disney’s new streaming universe, in which Marvel characters populate both Disney Plus and Hulu?

That’s a question for the aftermath of Dark Phoenix, which, after many bumps in the road, finally arrives June 7.
