Telltale Games shuts down, future and ongoing projects dropped

Telltale games, the company behind many popular narrative adventure games such as The Wolf Among Us, Tales from the Borderlands, and The Walking Dead, among others is shutting down. As it turns out, the abrupt closing of the studio has taken many by surprise, including employees of the studio, who were getting laid off in droves. That was initially how news got out about the closure, when several ex-employees from Telltale took to social media about the situation. Furthermore, it looks like future and ongoing projects Telltale had planned have also been dropped. This includes the planned collaboration they had with Netflix for a Stranger Things game. Netflix however is still looking to make the game and is looking at “other options”.

The majority of Telltale’s staff have been laid-off, with only a skeleton crew of 25 members remaining in order to meet certain obligations. So while the studio’s closure is not yet official, it is inevitable. Considering the fact that at one point in time the studio had over 400 employees, this is a stark difference.

The final installment of The Walking Dead series, The Walking Dead: The Final Season is also not going to be finished apparently. The second episode however, will still release on time. We won’t get more beyond that though. It’s unfortunate because fans of the series were somewhat looking forward to this one.

There is still a chance that another studio might pick it up. As tweeted by Telltale’s Twitter, many studios have come forward.

With regards to Netflix, while the streaming giant is looking elsewhere to make their Stranger Things game, Telltale’s Minecraft: Story Mode will still be making its way onto Netflix as planned as told by the streaming company to Variety, which the current skeleton crew is currently finishing up.
