Us trailer: Jordan Peele’s Get Out follow-up teases a creepy mystery

Jordan Peele’s latest, entitled Us, might be the best Christmas present you get this morning.

Unlike Peele’s Academy-Award-winning Get Out, which explored horrors rooted in reality as protagonist Chris escapes the racist Armitage family, Us delves into the supernatural, creating a new monster mythology that Peele, as he told press at a preview event for the trailer, hopes will reflect another facet of society.

“We are our own worst enemies,” Peele said.

In order to prepare the cast for this supernatural delve into horror, Peele assigned his cast some required viewing, horror films such as Dead Again, The Shining, The Babadook, It Follows, A Tale of Two Sisters, The Birds, Funny Games, Martyrs, Let the Right One In, and The Sixth Sense.

Though Us won’t be explicitly about race like Get Out, Peele said that it was still important for him to have a black family at the center of the movie.

Starring Black Panther stars Winston Duke and Lupita Nyong’o as Gabe and Adelaide Wilson, Us finds a married couple on a family trip to the beach that goes horribly wrong. In the trailer, we see the son of the family wander away from the beach toward an eerie lone figure with hands dripping blood. Though Adelaide is trying to enjoy the vacation, she’s increasingly paranoid due to deep trauma from her past.

Later, when the family gathers in their beach house, four mysterious figures wordlessly show up in the driveway. But this isn’t a simple redo of The Strangers.

The twist? Those visitors are eerie dopplegangers of the family. They look like them, they act like them, they think like them — everything is the same, except with unsettling creepy smiles and some deeper, darker motives. There are also bunnies. Lots of bunnies.

Rounding out the cast are Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), Tim Heidecker (Bridesmaids), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman) and Anna Diop (Titans).

Us premieres on March 15. 2019.
