The Epic Games store is here, and it’s got free games

In case you weren’t aware, Epic Games is launching its own game store, the Epic Games store, in competition to Steam itself.

Epic Games has many things planned to entice both gamers and publishers, developers to make the switch from other platforms to theirs.

For players, Epic is planning to give away free games, with one free game on offering every fortnight (get it?) for the entirety of 2019. So even if you don’t buy anything, you’re still likely to check the store out once every 15 days. That is if you’re not playing Fortnite, if you are, you’re logging in everyday anyway so.

Epic is also using the store to bring game devs and influencers together using what they’re calling the Support-A-Creator programme. This basically makes it easier for developers and influencers such as video makers, streamers, cosplayers and more to easily get in touch with and promote games. This helps the influencers out as well, as they won’t have to rely solely on donations and will be rewarded for their efforts.

Epic is not including forums in their new store, stating that players have already migrated to Reddit, Discord and other social media, including the game’s own official websites. Which Epic is more than happy to let them link on the store.

For developers, Epic is offering a larger revenue share. Also, at the Game Awards, they announced the first set of games that are making its way to the store, with quite a few surprise entrants.

To start things off, Subnautica will be the first free game on the Epic Store, later this month. That, and Super Meat Boy, both of which are pretty great indie titles. Bastion and Transistor creator Supergiant Games also surprised everyone with their new title, called Hades, the early access of which is making it’s way to the store.

Also, Journey, the PS3 exclusive game that was incredibly popular is also making its way to PC, exclusively through the Epic Games store. Imagine that.
