Epic is introducing in-game tournaments with Fortnite update 6.1

In-game tournaments are coming with Fortnite update 6.1. The tournaments, as confirmed by Epic Games, will be open to everyone and for players from all platforms. They will also be pit against each other, regardless of control setups or platforms, and play against each other “as equals”.

Each tournament begins with a clean slate, meaning players will start from scratch and compete to earn points. As they earn points, either by placing high or getting multiple kills, players who have achieved a target score will be rewarded with pins. These pins we’re assuming will be somewhat similar to CS:GO badges, which players will be able to showoff in some way. They’ve also suggested that in the future these pins may be used to make players eligible for prizes, or be needed to advance further in tournament rounds.

These tournaments will be using matchmaking to keep things fair, meaning players who are dominating will most likely be placed against other players who are doing well. Similarly, if you’re having a hard time, things might get easier for you as you advance in the tournament.

Interestingly, there is no gating of platforms. According to Epic, after seeing the performance of players using controllers during the Summer Skirmish, PAX West and Fall Skirmish, they feel that those playing on controllers can be just as successful against the best PC players in the world.

Additionally, they added that this allows friends to play with and compete with each other, regardless of their platforms, which is always a plus.

Here are the first set of tournament dates:

• Alpha Tournament (Solo) : October 16 – October 21
• Beta Tournament (Duo) : October 23 – October 25
• Friday Night Fortnite (Squad) : October 19 – November 30
• Salty Springs Cup (Solo) : October 27 – October 31
• Tomato Temple Cup (Duo) : October 28 – November 1
